Pro-Whaling Spam Attack
Normally spam on ones blog is none too distressing. Spam advertising the latest software or pills to make you horny I can cope with. It is easy enough to delete. But last night some arsehole from Japan posted spam under our Wilson's prom Trip post advocating that Japan was killing whales for scientific purposes, that this was legal, and that eating whales was part of Japanese culture. This arsehole was deliberately targeting Australian blogs with this propaganda.
Targeted.My.Blog.
My mother used to write letters to the government about how she felt that the practice of commercial whaling was abhorrent. I remember her sending a letter to then PM Malcolm Fraser, urging Australia to sign the treaty against commercial and scientific whaling (1986 moratorium against commercial whaling). So I felt that this spam was particularly offensive, and an insult to my mother's memory. Needless to say I have deleted the spam.
The whaling Japan is doing in the Antarctic is not scientific. I'm not even going to buy into this discourse. Apart from saying that the claim to the butchering of whales as being "scientific" is to lend authority to an otherwise completely immoral activity. The Japanese actually invented the term "scientific whaling" in 1987, to get around the international treaty.
The whaling Japan is doing in the Antarctic is illegal. And Japan has repeatedly breached the Australian whale sanctuary hunting whales. They are not killing whales in Japanese waters they are killing them in Australian waters, or international waters at best.
The whaling Japan is doing in the Antarctic is not an integral part of Japanese culture. I'm an anthropologist and I can get into cultural relativist positions. But the practice of eating whale meat came into being post World War II after Japan surrendered and was occupied by America. The American general in charge of the show wanted a way of feeding people protein and turned to whaling. So this practice is a relatively recent practice. Japanese Professor Jun Morikawa, from Rakuno University, interviewed here, also does not believe that whaling is an integral part of Japanese culture. Nor does he believe that young people in Japan necessarily accept the practice.
When will this horrific practice end?

Whyyyyyyy???????????
Hey Steph!
Yes I believe that the Australian government should fuck spammers off with great big harpoons!
Oh you mean the whaling ships!!!
:P
Well the Australian government keeps making noises about this to Japan, but seeing as Japan is a major trading partner with Australia I doubt we shall see anything as significant as a boycott or trade embargo.
We shall see what happens over the next few years.
Cheers
