It is official: Ross Noble gives his audience fits

Well it has been some time since my last blog entry. A number of things have happened since the last one and I have not had a tremendous amount of time to blog, but possibly it is because I also have not much felt like writing anything for a bit.

Over a fortnight ago we received a letter via registered post. As soon as the mailman asked me to sign for it I knew what it was. We had been given notice to vacate our lovely old house. Which is sad. On the plus side it means change. We perhaps need a change. But change can be both exciting and scary.

Anyway, I had just finished re-writing chapter six then, and I have not got much of seven done. I've been either house hunting or I've been distracted wandering around the house tidying, organizing, and discarding things. We have accrued a lot of stuff over the years here. It would have been seven years in October that we have been living here, which is a bit of a record. But for the last few years, since our very first landlords sold the property, we have been living here on borrowed time really.

We always expected to be given notice to vacate. But it didn't really make it any better when we finally got it. And it could not come at much of a worse time in terms of me rewriting and not being employed. However, we have had an offer, which we have accepted to for a half house in Coburg. It is cheap, close to Alana's work and it is a change of surrounds. It might be only for a few months, but it could perhaps be for a year. Regardless, after I finally submit my PhD, we will be in a much better position to decide what we are going to do next.

...

Almost a week ago, on a Tuesday, Alana took me to see Ross Noble perform at the comedy festival. His show was hilarious. Very much a stream of consciousness type performance. Alana did note, however, that his show did somewhat depend a little more upon crudity this year than it had done in past years when we had gone to see him. And he is clever enough not to rely upon that. But it could have been just that particular show we went to see.

Also during Ross Noble's show a man in the audience collapsed. The woman with him began calling out for a doctor. She became very upset, absolutely hysterical. Her reaction frightened the fuck out of the audience. Absolute rupture in the 'normal reality' of what was going on. Luckily there was a woman doctor and a military paramedic in the audience who responded. The audience, of over a thousand people, however, fell absolutely silent. We thought that we were about to witness this man die right in front of us.

As it turned out the man had a seizure. Ross Noble, to his credit, continued the show until after 12 o'clock to 'make up for what happened.' And miraculously managed to come back from a man almost dying during his performance. So now it is official: Ross Noble gives his audience fits. And in future may need a warning that people can die laughing during his show. A little like the health warnings on cigarette packets or like performances that use strobe lighting effects. Interesting night.

I've always had a good laugh whenever I've seen him on TV. My wife went to one gig that she said was embarassing. It featured a dwarf as the butt of most jokes. Not everyone who plays the Festival is a headliner!

Best of luck with the move. I've moved house 4 times in the last 3 years and it certainly doesn't get easier. But you're right about the change that accompanies it. It's a fresh new start somewhere else, which is never a bad thing.

Lad Litter: Thanks for dropping by again. Ross Noble is very good. We were laughing pretty hard, then in some state of shock, and then laughing hard again. As I said, interesting night.

Mish: Glad you came back by too! 4 moves in 3 years seems like a lot to me at the moment! Probably because we have not had to move for a long while. Fresh start, change of pace for a bit, should be good...I hope!
