Neil Gaiman signing and moving house
Yesterday I went along to a Neil Gaiman reading, Q & A, and signing. Over the weekend I also moved house. My new place presently looks like a disaster area. Actually it is looking slightly better than a disaster area after unpacking and sorting out of things today.
Neil was a great speaker and the section of The Graveyard Book that he read was great. Neil puts on the voices of the characters and really transports you into his world. The central protagonist Bod's experiences of being 'educated' also had a resonance with my dislike of primary schooling at that age.
I then waited around to get Fragile Things signed. My brother had also brought along a copy of Fragile Things to be signed, but being the very nice man he is he was getting it signed for a friend of his for her birthday!
When I met Neil he was horribly nice and had been signing for about 3 hours the time we talked with him. (Edit: Neil would have been signing for about 4 hours total I reckon, which just shows his respect towards his fans and again what a nice man he is.) I offered him a jelly baby. It was kind of a Doctor Who reference. He politely declined and said 'If I have any sugar at the moment I'll probably pass out. I felt a tad awkward, as my gift of jellybabies had been rejected! I later wondered if he might not eat jellybabies due to them having gelatin in them? I'm not sure if Neil has any diet restrictions? So possibly jellybabies are not kosher (edit: nor obviously vegetarian).
Anyway, it was awesome to met him, although I was pretty bloody tired from moving house. So his signing 'Ed, fragile wishes, Neil.' was most appropriate.
Great way to break up this moving house unpacking thing too.
I'm now a bit sorted out, but my computer monitor - videocard is threatening to give out on me. I had given up hope on my monitor but it has decided to work, so I thought I'd write a quick blog.
